1.1.1 July

Big Woods Trail
On the morning of Independence Day, with the skies a neutral grey, I took a walk through the Big Field to the Big Woods and enjoyed the crooked old trees.

1.1.2 October

Solo paddle on Lake Sagamore, Adirondacks
I set out for a solitary hike, but decided instead to take the canoe out to see the setting sun. This lake used to be part of a camp owned by Durant then Vanderbilt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagamore\_Camp).
A Visit to Pleasant Hill and Newton
On a recent trip to Oxford I breezed through the town of my childhood, Pleasant Hill, OH. I visited my brother Jon's grave that has the Stillwater River in the background. I also had the privilege of seeing the physical education teacher, Marty Dale. We talked for quite a while and it was clear she was happy for the new school being built, even though it means tearing down the old. There was a beam that the community was signing, so I made a mark for the "transient tribe" Burt.

1.1.3 November

A pleasant Sunday after Halloween
The day started with the Halloween candy sort and trade. Later Emily went to help with the smokehouse restoration project at Whiting Road Nature Preserve, and Tim continued on the Blue Trail then strolled by the Lake.

1.1.4 December

A morning walk in Webster Park
This morning the sun was shining through the windows and I took this as an invitation for a walk. The temperature was a bit above freezing but here and there the ice remained. These few miles of wood and water reminds me how the wonder of the world helps bring me enjoyment and peace.
A snowy morning walk in Webster Park
Snow started dusting the ground on the night of the 27th. On the morning of the 28th there was about 3 or so inches of fresh snow which was an invitation for another walk in Webster Park, this time with the family. We walked along Mill Creek to the Lake playing the whole way. Back at home we had hot chocolate from scratch to warm our cheeks and insides.

1.2.1 January

A hike to a pocket of wind damage
On the two year anniversary of a wind storm in Webster, I hiked Big Woods Trail to see the pocket of damage where a large tree fell and broke another. I found it originally within a week of the storm and have enjoyed going back to observe the changes through the years and the seasons.

1.2.2 March

A Varied Spring Day
Temperatures were in the 60s and the sun shone on a day where the kid's were out of school and I was out of work early. The pictures describe three different parts of the day:
  1. With the snow melted we saw the trails that voles took when snow covered the ground.
  2. Some of the flowering plants are emerging to start gathering energy from the sun.
  3. Rachel and I took a 2.5 mile bike ride and visited the Mill Creek Community Club where we'll get to swim this summer.

1.2.3 April

Attempts at Artistry in Nature
I have recently been considering digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras to have more control and flexibility for the photographs. Part of that consideration is a solid understanding of what I want to shoot and whether our current camera is sufficient. Today's record-breaking warmth was an invitation to take a bike and hike to find subjects for some attempts at artistic photography. As it happened I found myself at one of my special spots for contemplation; in the hillocks where water runs from under a tree. It was a good day.

1.2.4 July

Fireworks at Harris Hill Park
The Fourth of July fireworks were on the 3rd of July this year. The best part of the celebration was spending time with friends swimming, grilling, and visiting. We walked from their house to the park and settled in about 9:30. For thirty minutes I played with low-light photography and then the fireworks began.

1.3.1.1 Bare Hill Unique Area
Sunrise over Canandaigua Lake
Bare Hill Unique Area (Canandaigua, NY)
While looking for a new place to hike I found Bare Hill Unique Area (http://www.footprintpress.com/FingerLakes/Barehill.htm). It was described as a high point over Canandaigua Lake where Indians used to congregate. In particular, a stone at the top marks where councils had fires and is named Council Rock. The adventure for this day was to hike to Council Rock before sunrise, then watch as the landscape changed with the light.
